Violetta Detoro

From an early age, I felt drawn to a career in early childhood education. As the youngest in my family, I was naturally interested in caring for and supporting younger children. Although my path to becoming an Early Childhood Educator (ECE) was not direct, my commitment to working with children and youth remained constant.

My interest in the field was strengthened during high school, when I completed a co-operative education placement in a kindergarten classroom. There, I supported a young child diagnosed with autism. This meaningful experience confirmed my desire to work with children with diverse needs, including those affected by trauma.

I enrolled at Wilfrid Laurier University to study Psychology, initially planning to become a therapist. A subsequent placement in a kindergarten classroom, however, helped me recognize that I wanted to serve children and families more directly through community-based, front-line work. With this clearer sense of purpose, I changed direction and completed a bachelor’s degree in Early Learning Program Development at Conestoga College.

During the program, I expanded my knowledge of early childhood education and gained valuable insight into Special Needs Resourcing. I also collaborated with different organizations such as the Children’s Planning Table to support the development of programs and services in the Kitchener–Waterloo area. This work led to my first paid co-operative education placement as a Resource Consultant with KW Habilitation, where I discovered how rewarding this profession could be.

After earning my degree, I returned to childcare as a lead ECE to deepen my classroom experience, while maintaining the long-term goal of returning to resource consulting. When I was ready to take that next step, I successfully secured a Resource Consultant position in Simcoe County.

For nearly five years, I have had the privilege of working as a Resource Consultant and supporting children, families, and childcare professionals. It is deeply rewarding to see children grow, achieve meaningful goals, and build a strong foundation for their future. I also value the opportunity to guide families through complex or challenging circumstances, including processing new information and navigating a diagnosis.

Early childhood education continues to be a natural and fulfilling career for me. I bring a collaborative approach, a strong commitment to advocacy, and a dedication to lifelong learning. Above all, I am passionate about helping children reach their full potential and proud to contribute to the well-being of the children, families, and communities I serve.
